Job summary

The Specialty Pharmacy Technician provides advanced technical support to the pharmacy team. They ensure the accuracy of prescriptions, laboratory results, and prescription billing.

Tasks and responsibilities

Specialty Prescription Management

  • Analyze and ensure compliance of specialty medication prescriptions (biologics, injectables, complex oral therapies)
  • Verify clinical eligibility criteria and patient support programs (e.g., RAMQ criteria, private insurance)
  • Perform verification of bulk medication billing
  • Validate laboratory information according to established protocols
  • Perform product VCC (final content verification) when required

Patient Follow-Up and Clinical Support (within scope of practice)

  • Explain medication delivery methods, storage requirements, and logistics
  • Ensure follow-up on renewals and therapy persistence
  • Participate in communications with clinical teams
  • Perform clinical follow-ups delegated by the pharmacist
  • Refer specific clinical questions to the pharmacist

Compliance, Quality, and Safety

  • Apply quality assurance protocols specific to specialty medications
  • Comply with regulatory standards (OPQ, RAMQ, controlled substances legislation, if applicable)
  • Document any deviations or incidents according to procedures
Skills and qualifications
  • Diploma of College Studies (DEC) in Pharmacy Technology
  • Extensive pharmacy experience (strong asset)
  • Knowledge of refrigerated, biologic, and high-risk medications
  • Strong understanding of specialty medications, including logistics and administration
  • Knowledge of insurance systems (RAMQ, private insurers) and special authorization processes
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize
  • Ability to work in a high-volume, high-accuracy environment
  • Proficiency with computer tools (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Ability to draft procedures related to the pharmacy technician role
  • Excellent communication skills with patients, prescribers, and external programs
